Sankofa Family Literacy Summer Series is a literacy enrichment program for students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade. Through reading, storytelling, creativity, cultural awareness, and hands-on activities, students will prepare for the upcoming school year in a fun, supportive environment.

About the Series

Sankofa means "go back and get it." It reminds us that by learning from our past, we build a stronger future.Through books, culture, creativity, and community, our children will discover their stories and their power.

 

This program is designed to help students:

  • Get ready for kindergarten

  • Build reading confidence

  • Strengthen early literacy skills

  • Prepare for the next grade level

  • Develop creativity and self-expression

  • Enjoy culturally relevant books and stories

  • Take home books and literacy activities each week

Program Details

  • Who: Students entering Kindergarten–3rd Grade

  • When: July 7, 2026 - July 30, 2026

    • Tuesdays: Student sessions

      • Kindergarten: 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM PST

      • Grades 1-3: 5:45 PM - 6:30 PM PST

      • Grades 4-5: 6:45 PM - 7:30 PM PST

    • Thursdays: Family literacy workshops from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM PST

    • Saturday (July 11th): Family Community Day from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM PST

  • Location: Virtual & In-Person for Family Community Day

  • Cost: Free

  • Take home books to build their libraries at home

We need caring educators, specialist, and community partners like you to help prepare our young scholars!

  • Be a volunteer student facilitator

  • Serve as a family resource and facilitate family workshops

  • Volunteer during Family Community Day and help us serve our families
